Another day, another approach and more importantly I remembered to bring another few ratchet straps. After a lot of grunting and twisting, the bolts finally went in place and I was able to tighten the beam in place (well nearly). I will need to keep an eye on it over the next year to see if it settles down and if not it will need to be changed.
With the 6 posts and cross members in place I was able to start on the roof support beams that are delivered in two halves. The beams are rebated at each end to fit into the tops of the posts which squares the construction up and adds to its rigidity.
Although I managed to get the first of the rear beams in with its braces, the braces did not fit well and the second beam would just not sit down in place. It is not easy manipulating 250 kgs of wood 3 metres high on a ladder in order to try moving the bracing posts around to see which fitted better so eventually I decided to take it back out and find out why it was not working.
Despite tying the posts to the wall to keep them vertical it seems the first on had slipped and I am sure that is the problem. I will attack it again tomorrow.
